Bullying and the Bystander
The Guidance Theme for November is “Respect”, and we have taken this opportunity to educate students on identifying and managing bullying behavior as the “victim” and the “bystander.”
In an article from Educational Leadership, “What Students Say About Bullying,” researchers surveyed 13,000 students from all grade levels on the most effective strategies for dealing with a bully. Students in this study also identified actions of bystanders, and it seems the most overt action may not be the most effective.
According to the students surveyed, the most helpful action was to become an
ally to the victim and begin including that student in social activities during free time. Students report decreased levels of bullying behavior when they are not isolated from their classmates. Along the same lines, showing genuine friendship and disapproval of the bullying behavior help the victimized student retain a higher level of self-confidence. Finally, bystanders can help fellow classmates by finding a trusted adult or offering support when telling adults at a later time.
As we work to cultivate a respectful and tolerant school climate, we encourage parents to reinforce these principles at home as well.

Sleep Matters for School
Children need intellectual stimulation, healthy eating habits, physical activity and sleep to grow and develop along with their peers.
For today’s busy families, bedtimes can be a point of contention in your child’s nightly routine. Although they may not feel like they need to go to sleep at their specified bedtime, research has shown especially for elementary and middle school students, getting 9-10 hours of sleep a night can positively affect their attentiveness and ability to recall previously learned information.
As published in NutureShock: New Thinking About Children (Bronson & Merryman, 2009), children today get one hour less sleep a night compared to thirty
years ago. Likewise, lack of sleep has been linked to higher incidence of attention problems and difficulty with academic learning.
Encouraging set bedtimes and monitoring your child’s sleep is one powerful way parents can ensure they are sending their child to school with an alert mind and positive learning attitude.
